Flashback: Samsung Galaxy S III had both brains and brawn

The Samsung Galaxy S III was a rousing success, but the years since its launch in 2012 and now have caused memories of its innovative design to fade. Samsung Galaxy S III official shots The Galaxy S III (the last in the series to use Roman numerals) was unveiled in London in early May 2012. Samsung raked in 9 million pre-orders from 100 carriers worldwide before the phone was released a month later. It sold 20 million units in the first 100 days of availability, then reached 30 million sold in November. By the time the S III was relegated to the history books, it reportedly sold...

Samsung Galaxy Note10 and Note9 phones are already getting December security patch OTA

Yes, you read that correctly, December security patches, even though, as of writing this, it is still technically November. You won't hear us complain, though, especially since Samsung kind of managed the same feat for the November Galaxy S10 security patch, which started seeding in late October. If this becomes a habit, the Korean giant definitely deserves some praise. As things currently stand, Galaxy Note10 and Note10+ users in about 25 Europe markets should be able to fetch an N97*FXXS1ASKB OTA package, thorough the phone's update menu. As for the Galaxy Note9, as far as we can...

Vivo iQOO Neo with Snapdragon 855+ passes through TENAA

Vivo appears to be developing a certain pattern when it comes to its iQOO line. Especially the Neo part of it. First there was the original iQOO Neo, rocking a Snapdragon 845 chipset, followed only a few month later by the iQOO Neo 855. That one swapped in a Snapdragon 855 and sprinkled just a few bonuses, like slightly faster charging and a bigger selfie camera. Other than that, the phones are identical both inside and out. Now, according to a new TENAA certification listing and perfectly in-tune with earlier rumors, vivo will be doing yet another refresh to the Snapdragon 855+ inside the...

The Russian V17 sports a 6.38" FHD+ AMOLED display with a waterdrop notch, but according to a recent report, the Indian version will feature a 6.44" OLED panel with a punch hole in the top-right corner. Another difference between the Russian and Indian V17 units is that the former has a diamond-shaped quad camera on the back, but the latter will sport an L-shaped quad camera setup. Sony unveiled the mid-range Xperia 10 at MWC this February alongside the Xperia 1 flagship. Like that high-end model, the Xperia 10 also has a supertall screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio, making for a pretty unique look (especially when you add in Sony's blocky design language). While you may not watch a lot of 21:9 video content on your smartphone, this aspect ratio may also make you scroll less inside any apps that rely on that vertical action a lot - like, say Facebook, or Instagram. The display is definitely the Xperia 10's main claim to fame and its clear differentiator from the...

Samsung indirectly confirms Galaxy S8 and Note 8 won’t get Android 10

Samsung has hammered the final nail in the coffin of the hopes Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 owners may have had of getting the Android 10 update. The company’s official Android 10 update schedule that’s been going live in various countries in the last few days makes no mention of the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8 in the list of eligible devices, indirectly confirming that the 2017 flagships will spend the rest of their days on Android Pie.

Considering the company’s policy of only providing two major Android OS updates for all of its devices whether they fall in the flagship or budget segment, it was already pretty clear that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 would not get Android 10. But, as always, one of Samsung’s customer care reps raised a false alarm when they told a Galaxy S8 user that the device is slated to get the Android 10 update, making everyone wonder if that oft-criticized policy was finally going to change.

And it’s possible Samsung will start providing a third big Android version update to its devices at some point, but it’s likely to do so with more recent phones and tablets. We certainly hope the company at least supports its flagships for longer than it does right now, but again, should that happen, Samsung probably won’t extend the courtesy to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.

Could one of the Galaxy S11’s cameras be a ‘Bright Night Sensor’?

There are plenty of trademarks that Samsung applies for all year round. And one of the company’s latest filings has caught our attention – Samsung filed a trademark for a new image sensor called ‘Bright Night Sensor’ on November 28. Bright Night was originally Samsung’s version of a dedicated Night mode for the Galaxy S10 camera, but the fact that the company is now making an actual image sensor with the same name suggests something is afoot for one of Samsung’s upcoming smartphones.

The first thing that comes to mind is that this could be one of the new sensors we will see on the back of the Galaxy S11 or Galaxy S11+. The latter was shown in leaked renders with five rear cameras, and it’s possible one of these could be dedicated to improving results in low-light conditions. Precisely how this ‘Bright Night Sensor’ would work is anyone’s guess – perhaps this sensor is just the laser autofocus module that is rumored to be present on the Galaxy S11 series and not a proper camera?

It’s hard to say, as there’s not enough information available about the Galaxy S11 cameras at this time. Rumors suggest the flagship will be equipped with a 108MP main camera and a telephoto lens capable of 5x zoom, and we can assume another camera will be dedicated to taking ultra-wide pictures. The rest is a mystery, unless we don’t count the Galaxy S11e, which is expected to have a traditional triple camera setup like the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10.

Galaxy Note 10 finally gets a new Android 10 beta update

Just a day after the stable Android 10 update was released for the Galaxy S10 in Germany, Samsung has released a new beta update for the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+. This is the third beta update for the Galaxy Note 10 series and is rolling out in India right now. It carries build number N97*FXXU1ZSKN and includes a number of bug fixes along with the December 2019 security patch.

The list of bug fixes in the latest beta for the Note 10 and Note 10+ suggests there’s some time to go before Samsung has a stable update ready. Issues like continuous phone restarts with a “blackened and blinking” screen, disconnections when using Bluetooth headsets, failure to display SD card files in the My Files app, and more are fixed in the third beta. There’s also a note in the changelog about limiting “the clock step by step depending on temperature”, which sounds like it’s supposed to control the phone from overheating.

To download the latest beta update on your Galaxy Note 10 or Note 10+, open the Settings app, tap Software update, then select Download and install. Do tell us if you are receiving the update in a different country by leaving a comment; we will also update this article once we get reports of the update rolling out in other markets.

Yet now Oppo VP Brian Shen has said that won't be the case and the Reno3 Pro 5G will pack a 4,025 mAh battery, which is solid even by today's standards. Samsung may be the sole supplier of OLED panels for 2020 iPhone Pro models

When Apple made the switch to OLED screens for its top-end smartphones in 2017, beginning with the iPhone X, it chose Samsung Display as its supplier. Despite Samsung being its biggest competitor in smartphones, the Cupertino company had no option but to rely on Samsung for its OLED panels because of the latter’s dominance in producing high-quality OLED mobile displays at scale.

In the last couple of years, Apple has tried to cut down its reliance on Samsung, but that’s not easy as long as the iPhone maker wants the best panels in the market. A case in point is the latest report from ET News that is saying Samsung may be the sole supplier of OLED panels for 2020 iPhone Pro models. Even for the non-pro model, Samsung is reportedly one of the suppliers along with LG.

Apple is expected to release three iPhone 12 models in September next year. The lineup supposedly includes an iPhone 12 with a 6.1-inch display, iPhone 12 Pro with a 5.4-inch display, and an iPhone 12 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display, with all of them being OLED panels. Going by the ET News report, Samsung Display will be the exclusive supplier of the 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch panels for the Pro models, while both Samsung and LG will supply for the 6.1-inch regular iPhone 12.

The report goes on to state that Samsung convinced Apple to opt for Y-OCTA OLED panels for its Pro models by offering attractive terms. Y-OCTA technology eliminates the need for a separate touch-screen layer by using on-cell touch sensing. This makes screens lighter and thinner while also reducing production costs. Since no other supplier can mass produce these Y-OCTA OLED panels, Apple apparently decided to go with Samsung.

Samsung and Apple share a complicated relationship. While they fiercely compete against each other in smartphones, tablets, wearables, and more, they also have a supplier-client relationship with the Korean company supplying many of the components that go into making Apple’s products. As one of the largest smartphone component suppliers in the market, Samsung shares a similar relationship with many other smartphone vendors as well.

Galaxy A51 crosses another obstacle on its way to retail shelves

The Galaxy A51 has been approved by the FCC, a week after it received its Bluetooth certification and two weeks after leaked renders gave us a 360-degree look at the phone’s design. The Galaxy A51 is rumored to launch sometime in December along with the Galaxy Note 10 Lite and Galaxy S10 Lite, with India expected to be the country where the device will first go on sale.

The Galaxy A51’s main upgrade over the Galaxy A50 will be the camera. The A51 has a quad camera setup at the back, consisting of a 48MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP depth sensor, and a 5MP macro camera. As we had exclusively revealed, a macro camera will be seen on a Galaxy phone for the first time. Macro cameras are great for taking pictures of objects at a close distance – macro cameras aren’t proper substitutes for telephoto cameras, which allow you to zoom in on subjects while standing in one place, but they are cheaper, making them suitable for affordable mid-range devices.

The rest of the Galaxy A51’s specs will be quite similar to the Galaxy A50 and the Galaxy A50s. It should have a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a centered punch hole and smaller bezels, an Exynos 9611 octa-core SoC, 4/6GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, a 32MP front camera, and a 4,000 mAh battery with 15W fast charging support. It will run Android 10, making it one of the first non-flagship Galaxy smartphone ever to launch with the latest version of Android out of the box before the next Galaxy S flagship.

Stable Galaxy S10 Android 10 update now out for those on Android Pie

Last year, it was a Christmas gift, and this time, Samsung has chosen Thanksgiving as the special occasion to release the next version of Android for its latest flagship. The company pushed out the stable Android 10 update to the Galaxy S10 series in Germany for beta users earlier today, and now the update is rolling out for the general public, which means you can update to Android 10 and One UI 2.0 right away even if you’re on Android Pie.

Like the update for beta users, the stable update for those on Android Pie is only available in Germany at this time. It could be a few days or a few weeks before Samsung expands availability of the update to other markets, and we can only just wait and see which of the two it will be. For now, if you’re in Germany and are rocking a Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, or Galaxy S10+, you should be able to download Android 10 by tapping the Download and install option in the phone’s Settings » Software update menu.

Once you have updated your phone, do check out our coverage of all the new features you get with One UI 2.0 and see what improvements and changes it brings to the user interface over One UI 1.1/1.5. Also let us know in the comments whether the update has been released in your country.

Samsung Galaxy S10 receiving stable Android 10 update

Samsung has released the stable build of Android 10 for the Galaxy S10 series. This comes as a surprise since the roadmaps for multiple countries shared by the company revealed the smartphones wouldn't get Android 10 this year. Anyways, the new build weighs around 140MB in size and sports version number G97**XXU3BSKO. It comes with One UI 2.0 and brings along Android 10 features and December 2019 security patch. Galaxy Note 10 Lite: Everything we know so far

For the first time since the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung launched two different variants of the Note flagship in 2019. Extending the Galaxy S series strategy to the Note lineup, the Korean company launched the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ in August this year. Barely three months later, as we reported exclusively, Samsung is looking to add one more variant, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, to the already crowded flagship lineup.

As the name suggests, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite is supposed to be a cheaper and less powerful Note 10 model. It’s akin to the popular Galaxy Note 3 Neo from 2014 in terms of its positioning. This time, however, the company already has a “cheaper” Note flagship in the form of the regular Note 10, which begs the necessity for a new model. There is definitely room for a more affordable S Pen device, but is Samsung going to price the Note 10 Lite competitively to fill that niche?

We have to wait for the official announcement for answers, but for now, let’s take a look at everything we know about the Galaxy Note 10 Lite so far. We will update this page as and when new information surfaces, so be sure to bookmark it for easy access.

Design

There haven’t been any credible leaks about the design of the Galaxy Note 10 Lite yet. However, if we were to make a guess, it wouldn’t look much different from the existing Note 10 models as that would help the company keep the development costs low. The way Samsung reused the same designs across various Galaxy A smartphones in 2019 is indicative of the company’s approach to not tweak the design too much for variants of the existing models.

Like the Galaxy Note 10, and like higher-end mid-range devices like the Galaxy A90, the Note 10 Lite will probably sport a glass and metal build for a premium look and finish. To what extent its design would differ from its pricier siblings may eventually come down to the number of cameras, notch design, and the type of display (curved vs. flat).

We should get a better picture of the Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s design in the coming days as it inches closer to launch, paving the way for more leaks.

Specifications

According to a recent Geekbench listing, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite will come with an Exynos 9810 SoC, 6GB RAM, and Android 10 with One UI 2.0. That’s the same chipset used in the Galaxy Note 9, which would make the Note 10 Lite less potent than all the other Note 10 variants. It also makes the Note 10 Lite theoretically inferior in raw processing power to the Galaxy S10 Lite that will be powered by a Snapdragon 855 chipset. From the looks of it, it appears the Galaxy Note 10 Lite will be a Note 9 in the Note 10’s body.

Samsung could opt for a flat AMOLED display to keep the costs low and also to offer enough reasons for people to pay more for the regular Note 10/10+. We are currently not sure of the screen size, but the resolution should be FHD+ since that’s what the regular Note 10 offers as well.

The FCC documents reveal that the S Pen for the Note 10 Lite comes with Bluetooth connectivity. Samsung did this first with the Galaxy Note 9 last year to make its stylus more helpful. Since the rest of the Note 10 Lite internals seem to mimic the Galaxy Note 9, there is a high chance that even its S Pen will be similar both in form and function to last year’s offering.

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no information about the camera situation on the Note 10 Lite yet. Samsung could either go with the setup on the Note 9 or opt for a tweaked version of what’s available on the Note 10/10+. Details about other specifications such as the battery capacity, supported charging speed, screen size, etc. are all unknown at this point in time.

Price and release date

A recent report from India said that the Galaxy Note 10 Lite and S10 Lite would be launched in the subcontinent in December. The S Pen for the device recently secured FCC approval, adding credence to reports about its imminent arrival. A launch in December also sounds plausible since holiday shopping can boost sales and unveiling it any later than that will put it too close to the Galaxy S11’s announcement.

So far, we haven’t heard anything concrete about the possible price of the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. Ultimately, the success of the cheaper Note offering may come down to the pricing. If it’s priced too close to the Galaxy Note 10/10+, then prospective buyers may not see the value proposition in the Lite model, particularly when you consider all the great deals Samsung keeps offering for its top-end smartphones.

Galaxy A50s and Galaxy M30 get November security update

The Galaxy A50s and Galaxy M30 are being treated to the November 2019 security patch in India. An update has been released for the two phones in the country, carrying software version A507FNXXS2ASK5 and M305FDDS3BSK1 for the A50s and M30 respectively. Both updates are devoid of any new features and only include the latest security fixes.

Galaxy A50s and Galaxy M30 owners are probably going to have to wait for the Android 10 update for new features, although the wait for those who have a Galaxy M30 should be considerably shorter. According to Samsung India’s official roadmap, the Galaxy M30, along with the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy A30, is set to get the Android 10 update in January. The Galaxy A50s, Galaxy A50, and all other 2019 A series phones will start receiving the update from April.

You should see a notification on your Galaxy A50s or M30 when the update is available for your device. You can also manually download the update on your phone by opening its Settings app, selecting Software update, then tapping Download and install. If that doesn’t work, you can update your phone by flashing the latest firmware on it using a computer. You can find all firmware for the A50s and M30 in our firmware archive.

Samsung Internet 10.2 released, brings back Video Assistant feature

Samsung has released version 10.2 of the Samsung Internet browser and is bringing back the popular Video Assistant feature. To be clear, Video Assistant already made its return in the beta version of Samsung Internet three months ago, and it is now making its way to the stable version of the browser.

However, as we had explained before, Video Assistant is no longer as useful as it was before Samsung pulled it from the browser. Now, the feature does not allow you to open videos in a pop-up window on every site but only on websites that allow it. So, if you were hoping to watch YouTube videos in a pop-up window without paying for YouTube Premium by opening youtube.com in Samsung Internet, you’re out of luck.

However, Video Assistant isn’t a total loss in its reincarnation, as it still lets you watch videos on websites in full screen and stream them to the TV with one tap. Version 10.2 of Samsung Internet also brings the ability to relocate the buttons on the bottom toolbar, adds thumbnails to list view for the tab manager, and introduces something called “Allowed Apps”, which lets you stop apps from forcibly opening Samsung Internet.

You can download Samsung Internet 10.2 from Google Play. We also have the APK for the app in our APK section, which you can use to manually install the latest version of Samsung Internet on your phone or tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite appears on Geekbench with Exynos 9810

Samsung has been keeping off the Lite smartphone market for the last few years, but rumors are pointing to at least two new phones coming in now. The latest report comes from Geekbench, where the Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite was spotted. The phone was benchmarked with the SM-N770F model name, revealing an Exynos 9810 chipset and 6GB RAM. That chipset is already a year old - it debuted with the Galaxy Note9. It's still built on a decently efficient 10nm process and packs decent processing power even if it's no longer up there with the best. We are sure this is a completely new...

Galaxy Note 10 Lite benchmark reveals Exynos 9810, 6GB of RAM

At long last, we are finally getting to see some of the specs the Galaxy Note 10 Lite could offer. The cheaper Galaxy Note 10 variant (SM-N770F) has surfaced on the Geekbench benchmark database, sporting the Exynos 9810 SoC, 6GB of RAM, and Android 10. Earlier this week, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s Bluetooth-enabled S Pen was certified by the FCC, and the device is rumored to be launching sometime in December, at least in India.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite could be less powerful than the Galaxy S10 Lite

The Exynos 9810 and 6GB of RAM make the Galaxy Note 10 Lite less powerful than the Galaxy S10 Lite, which is also expected to launch soon and has a Snapdragon 855 and 8GB of RAM under the hood. The Note 10 Lite’s name and specs make it seem like it could have the design of the Galaxy Note 10 and the specs of the Galaxy Note 9. That would certainly not be a bad combination if the price is right, and the S Pen will no doubt be the main attraction.

All we can do is speculate, however, as Samsung has been doing a pretty good job of keeping the Galaxy Note 10 Lite under wraps. It was nearly two months ago that we revealed the existence of the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, but it’s only now that the device is starting to make public appearances. More details should surface soon, and you can rest assured we will let you know as soon as we learn something new.

Galaxy Note 8 is being updated with December security patch

Samsung has yet again beaten Google to the punch in releasing the next Android security patch for its devices before Google has officially released details of the security patch. Samsung released the December security update for the Galaxy A50 less than a day ago, and it has now pushed out a similar update for the Galaxy Note 8.

The update is rolling out in Panama, where the November security update for the Galaxy Note 8 was released in mid-November, which is a good indication of how serious Samsung is getting with security updates, at least in some markets. The company is even working hard on the Android 10 update and is currently hoping to release it for both budget and flagship devices in January, 2020.

The Galaxy Note 8’s December update sports software version N950FXXS8DSK1 and should be making its way to other countries in the coming days. It contains only security fixes, and you can check if the update is available for your phone by opening the Settings app, navigating to Software update, then selecting Download and install. Alternatively, you can update your phone by downloading the latest firmware from our firmware archive.

Both budget and flagship Galaxy phones could get Android 10 in January

In what would be a first for Samsung, the next version of Android could be released for both budget and flagship smartphones within a few weeks. According to Samsung India’s roadmap for the Android 10 update, the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, Galaxy M20, Galaxy M30, Galaxy A30 are all set to be updated to Android in January.

While it’s a bit unfortunate that Samsung is aiming for a January release for the stable Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update for even the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10, it would be quite the feat if the company manages to push the update out to those other devices in the first month of 2020. And it could do certainly manage that, as it started developing Android 10 firmware for the Galaxy M20 and M30 in mid-November and is already running beta programs for the 2019 and 2018 flagships.

Galaxy Fold, Tab S6, A50, and more to get Android 10 in April

The inclusion of the Galaxy A30 might seem a bit surprising, as it isn’t one of the more popular A series phones launched in 2019, but its hardware is rather similar to that of the Galaxy M30 so Samsung should be able to update it around the same time. Unfortunately, it seems no device will be updated in February. The Galaxy M40 is slated to get the update in March, but the rollout will only begin in earnest for the rest of Samsung’s eligible devices — including the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Tab S6 — from April.

However, there’s reason to be optimistic, as these schedules often apply only to the country where they are posted – Samsung Israel, for example, says the Galaxy S9 update will be out in April. And, as Samsung notes, these schedules can change in the future, so the estimated time frames for the update’s release aren’t set in stone.

Check out the image below to see when you can expect your Galaxy phone or tablet to get Android 10 in India. If you reside in a different country, you can check if a similar schedule has been posted for your country by going into the Notices section of the Samsung Members app.

Samsung may have finally succeeded in talking Apple into using its Y-OCTA OLED panels. Last year there were rumors that the 2019 generation iPhones will make the jump, but that didn't come to pass. Now, ETNews reports that Samsung will be the exclusive OLED supplier for the 5.4" and 6.7" iPhones. This makes the display panel thinner and cheaper to manufacture (having fewer layers can reduce glare to boot). According to ETNews, Samsung is the only company that can mass produce such...

Galaxy A50 gets new update including December 2019 security patch

Neither Google nor Samsung has detailed the December 2019 security patch, but the Galaxy A50 has beaten all the other models to the punch as it is now receiving a new update in Israel, which includes the latest security fixes. The December 2019 security patch is included in the latest Android 10 beta, but this is the first time that it reaches a Galaxy smartphone on a live build.

The new update targeting the Galaxy A50 carries version number A505FDDU3ASKA, which means that it should also technically include new features along with improved security. As yet, we are unable to confirm what these new features might be, but if you have received the update on your Galaxy A50 and you’ve noticed any new additions, feel free to let us know in the comment section below. Although the rollout is limited to Israel at present, it should expand into more regions sooner rather than later.

As usual, the update is accompanied by a notification which you can tap to begin the update process. Alternatively, you can head down to our firmware page, download the firmware manually, and install it on your device using your computer. Or you can launch the Settings app on your Galaxy A50, go to Software update and tap Download and install to try and trigger the update process manually.

Bluetooth S Pen for the Galaxy Note 10 Lite confirmed by the FCC

For a device that’s rumored to be launching in December, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite (SM-N770) has made surprisingly few unofficial appearances ever since we exclusively revealed such a device is in the works. The Galaxy S10 Lite, the other flagship spin-off Samsung is making, is also rumored for a December launch and has been considerably less shy.

We have seen an online benchmark, confirmation on its battery size, and even an FCC certification for the Galaxy S10 Lite while the Note 10 Lite continues to play hide and seek, but things may be changing soon. On November 26, the FCC certified the Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s S Pen, confirming at least one feature for the phone.

Bluetooth-enabled S Pen to accompany the Galaxy Note 10 Lite

The FCC documents reveal that the Galaxy Note 10 Lite will have a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen like the one seen on the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Note 10. That shouldn’t be surprising, and we would be more interested to learn whether it will also have a gyroscope built-in to enable air gestures (called Air actions) like the Galaxy Note 10 S Pen. Given the Lite moniker, Samsung could bundle a Bluetooth-only S Pen with the device, although that is just speculation at this time.

The Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s spec sheet is rather unknown at this time, although we can confirm it will have 128GB of internal storage. The handset hasn’t popped up on any online benchmarks yet, and it’s possible it might just be a Galaxy S10 Lite, which is supposed to be a rebranded Galaxy A91 for some markets, with an S Pen. It could also be a Galaxy A81 with an S Pen, as suggested by the discovery of a mysterious new device that could be a mashup of the Galaxy A and Galaxy Note series.

Unfortunately, no concrete information is available right now, but if the Galaxy Note 10 Lite is slated for a December launch, we should see more details about the device show up soon.
