Wireless DeX connections could be possible in the future

Samsung introduced the DeX mode with the launch of the Galaxy S8/S8+ last year. It is a feature in select Galaxy smartphones and tablets that allows users to connect their Galaxy devices to an external display, keyboard, and mouse to use DeX-optimised phone apps in a desktop-like environment for increased productivity.

At the time of the launch, the DeX mode required a dedicated accessory called DeX Docking Station for the feature to work. Samsung changed the form factor of the accessory from a docking station to a pad this year, but it still entailed users buying a $100 accessory to use DeX. All that changed when Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 9 and Tab S4 with many DeX-related improvements, including the ability to use DeX with a simple USB-C to HDMI cable.

Obviously, the next logical step is to make DeX connections wireless, and Samsung seems to be working precisely on that. Replying to a member’s question about making DeX work without any cable or a docking station, a Samsung forum moderator said the team is already working on it. He didn’t offer any timeline but stated “a few improvements need to be made first” before the feature is made available.

While a wireless DeX mode will be very convenient, it is not exactly a new concept. Microsoft did something similar with its wireless Continuum feature before abandoning its mobile OS. So, the technology is already there, and we know it works, which means it’s a matter of time before Samsung makes the DeX mode work wirelessly.
