Chase Pay can now use Samsung Pay’s MST tech for mobile payments

Samsung Pay is one of the most popular mobile payment solutions on the market. It is technologically superior to similar offerings out there since it works with almost every PoS terminal that can accept debit or credit cards. This is possible because, unlike other mobile payment services, Samsung Pay combines both NFC and patented Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology to make it compatible with nearly all payment terminals in the market.

So far, only the Samsung Pay app could use the MST tech in select Galaxy smartphones for mobile payments. However, it is going to change soon as Samsung and JPMorgan Chase have inked a deal which allows the Chase Pay app to use Samsung Pay’s MST tech to make payments. Chase Pay users can link their account to Samsung Pay and start making MST-based payments through the Chase Pay app. Apart from increased convenience, the collaboration will substantially increase the number of PoS terminals where the Chase Pay app can be used.

More rewards points as well

The partnership doesn’t stop there. Samsung is going one step further by incentivizing Chase Pay users through higher rewards points. After linking with Samsung Pay, users can earn both the Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Samsung Reward points for transactions made through the Chase Pay app. Though the press release makes it sound like a new promotion, it appears customers who make payments through the Chase cards in the Samsung Pay app were already receiving this benefit.

Significantly higher terminal compatibility is the prime reason behind Samsung Pay’s success, and the company is now sharing that USP with Chase Pay app users. It is not yet known what Samsung is getting in return for making this concession to Chase Pay. It will also be interesting to see if Samsung enters into similar partnerships in other markets as well.

Samsung rebrands Galaxy J8 as the Galaxy On8 for online-only sales in India

Under the Galaxy On lineup, Samsung rebrands some of its Galaxy J models as Galaxy On series devices and sell them exclusively online, often at a cheaper price point than the Galaxy J series counterparts. The company uses On series as a way to compete with the online-dominant Chinese brands without offending its offline partners.

After rebranding the Galaxy J6 at the On6, Samsung is now launching the Galaxy On8 as the J8’s online-only variant. The Galaxy On8 comes a 6” HD+ SuperAMOLED display, Snapdragon 450 SoC, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB internal storage, 16MP + 5MP dual rear camera set up, 16MP selfie camera, 3500 mAh battery, and Android 8.0 Oreo.

Priced cheaper than the Galaxy J8

As you can see from the specs, the Galaxy On8 is identical to the Galaxy J8 in terms of hardware. However, it is priced slightly cheaper than the J8 and is available only on Flipkart and Samsung Online Shop. While the Galaxy J8 costs ₹18,990 (~$277), the Galaxy On8 has a list price of ₹17,990 (~$262).

To sweeten the deal, Samsung will sell the Galaxy On8 at a discounted price of ₹16,990 (~$262) as an introductory offer. The Galaxy On8 will be available for purchase from August 6 onwards in black and blue. You can check out our hands-on review of the Galaxy J8 to get an idea about what the Galaxy On8 brings to the table.

Galaxy Note 9 shows up in a video published by retailer MobileFun

Well, well, what do we have here? A Galaxy Note 9 posing in front of the camera for its first live video appearance? That is indeed what we have today as the latest in the string of Galaxy Note 9 leaks, coming from retailer MobileFun. MobileFun has been obtained the video from a source in China, and the Note 9 seen in it is apparently being used to test screen protectors. Sadly, the phone isn’t shown with the display on, but it does look like it is the real deal.

Galaxy Note 9 shows up in first live video

The video doesn’t reveal anything we didn’t know about the Galaxy Note 9’s design already. The front is nigh impossible to differentiate from the Galaxy Note 8, but we do get a look at the slightly redesigned dual camera setup at the back along with the fingerprint sensor sitting below it. The Note 9 is also expected to be wider and thicker than the Galaxy Note 8 thanks to the larger battery inside. And there is also going to be a brown version, which we’re hoping will make a live appearance in the coming days so we can see what the new color looks like in the real world.

What do you think of the Galaxy Note 9 in the leaked video above?

YouTube has been rolling out a handful of features lately but as most of the times, some of them are available to just select number of users in a soak test before being introduced to the wider public. The latest update brings support for swiping to skip to the next or go back to the previus video but it's still not available to everyone. The gestures are pretty intuitive and replaces the forward and back buttons that appear on the video when you tap on it. It's a tad faster and more convenient this way.
